What Happened That Morning

Emergency responders were first called around 11:40 a.m. after a witness reported that a possibly intoxicated man was attempting to unload a jet ski at a public boat launch on Bayview Drive.

As Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers made their way to the scene, they received an update: a man and woman wearing life jackets were seen riding a jet ski in the bay.

Twenty minutes later, at 12:05 p.m., OPP were notified that CPR was being performed on an unresponsive man at a residence on County Road 9 — a short distance from the boat launch. He had been discovered after another boater noticed the unmanned jet ski circling nearby.

Emergency Response Efforts

A bystander immediately began CPR, with police officers continuing resuscitation efforts until paramedics arrived. The victim, identified as Ossario “Sam” Hoyte, was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy was expected to determine the exact cause of death.

Police later learned that the woman seen earlier with Hoyte had been dropped off onshore before the incident.

Why CPR Knowledge Matters

Water-related emergencies escalate quickly, and immediate CPR can greatly increase a person’s chance of survival after drowning or cardiac arrest.
This tragedy highlights how essential it is for bystanders — not just professionals — to have CPR skills.
