The Edmonton city councilors will return from recess for an urgent meeting to debate whether to make face masks mandatory in indoor public spaces.
Mayor Don Iveson called the special emergency advisory committee meeting a day after Calgary’s city council voted to mandate face masks in all indoor public spaces and the transit system amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
In response to Calgary’s decision, Premier Jason Kenney stated that cities are expected to make face mask decisions based on their specific situations as a one-size-fits-all approach will not work for the province. Iveson, who previously argued for any ruling on masks to be made uniformly by the province, stated that the council will now look at the option of taking a regional approach with the 12 other municipalities in the metropolitan area.
