A Mother’s Panic in a Parking Lot

On April 19, Evan’s mother was grocery shopping at a Real Canadian Superstore with her two children — her two-year-old daughter and newborn son. While loading groceries in the parking lot, she noticed Evan begin to foam at the mouth. Within moments, his skin turned blue and he became unresponsive.

A police constable successfully performed CPR on a newborn, restoring breathing and saving the infant’s life during an emergency.

Realizing her baby had stopped breathing, she screamed for help and called 911 as panic set in.

Officer Responds Within Moments

Const. Buys was conducting a traffic stop nearby when the emergency call came over the radio. He immediately abandoned the stop and raced to the scene.

When he arrived, he was met by a frantic mother pleading, “Please save my baby.” Buys quickly assessed the situation and placed Evan on the back seat of his cruiser, where he confirmed the infant had no pulse and was not breathing.

CPR Brings a Newborn Back to Life

Buys began CPR right away. His prompt response made all the difference.

By the time paramedics arrived, Evan’s colour was returning. Moments later, he coughed — then cried — a powerful sign that his heart and lungs had restarted. The baby was transported to a local Oakville hospital and later transferred to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto for further evaluation and tests.

Doctors credited the rapid delivery of CPR for Evan’s survival.

Why Immediate CPR Matters

This incident highlights a critical truth: CPR saves lives.
In cardiac arrest situations, every second without oxygen increases the risk of permanent injury. Effective CPR keeps blood flowing to the brain and organs until advanced medical care takes over.
