A 15-year old boy who collapsed while playing futsal was saved by bystanders with an AED. The incident occurred at Sir Robert Borden High School.
Based on a news release by the paramedics, an automated external defibrillator (AED) stationed at the school was used. The boy was playing in a futsal tournament when he collapsed. Futsal is a version of indoor soccer played with a slightly smaller ball.
A cardiologist was present and started CPR while others retrieved the school’s defibrillator. The teen was given a single shock before the paramedics arrived. The paramedics continued resuscitation and delivered more shocks before his pulse was restored.
The teen regained consciousness while on the way to a local hospital. Without the actions of the bystanders, the outcome would have been different. The event reminds everyone of the importance of bystander CPR and the early application.
Importance of first aid training
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) can save a life. Prompt delivery of life-saving techniques improves the chances of survival during emergencies.
