What Happened on the Transit Bus
According to Richmond RCMP, officers received multiple 911 calls just before 2 p.m. after an altercation broke out between two passengers. The bus pulled over across from the Aberdeen Station, where first responders soon arrived.
Social media footage captured paramedics performing CPR on the victim in the bus doorway as they fought to revive him from critical stab wounds. Richmond RCMP Cpl. Dennis Hwang confirmed that the 42-year-old Richmond man was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.
Police arrested a 22-year-old Richmond man following the incident. Investigators have not determined what sparked the confrontation or whether the two individuals knew one another.
Ongoing Police Investigation
To process the scene, RCMP shut down eastbound No. 3 Road near Cambie Road for several hours. Officers seized the bus to collect forensic evidence, and a nearby Domo Gas station remained closed for much of the afternoon and evening.
The RCMP also noted the importance of witnesses calling 911 immediately. While many passengers did phone for help, others left before police arrived. Investigators are now urging those individuals to come forward.
Cpl. Hwang also raised concern about a growing trend:
“What we’re seeing is instead of making the call to police, people would rather film a situation and get that up quickly for page clicks or something else.”
TransLink later confirmed that the incident did not disrupt transit service, though transit users expressed ongoing concerns about public safety on buses and trains.
Why CPR Made a Difference
In emergencies like this—especially when critical injuries lead to cardiac arrest—immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival. When blood flow is interrupted, every second counts, and early CPR can be the difference between life and death.
This incident serves as a powerful reminder that emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time. Learning CPR gives everyday people the ability to step in and make a life-saving difference before medical professionals arrive.
