VIA Rail is implementing a new face mask policy for passengers on trains and in stations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
VIA Rail announced that passengers will be required to wear a face mask if the appropriate physical distancing cannot be observed on trains and in stations. According to the company, this step is necessary as the economy is gradually reopening and expects an increase in ridership, and like the safety and well-being of both employees and passengers remains the top priority.
Masks will be mandatory for all VIA Rail customer-facing employees. Under the mask policy, the passengers will be:
- Required to use a face mask when appropriate physical distancing cannot be observed, especially in stations and at boarding.
- Required to use a mask at all times during their trip, except when eating and drinking.
VIA Rail stated that it will have a limited number of disposable masks available for passengers. Those who have medical conditions resulting in difficulty breathing unrelated to COVID-19, infants below two years old and small children will not be required to wear a mask.
