A father is teary-eyed as he looks at his 21-year old daughter who saved his life. On the day Martin Dansereau collapsed, he just finished a workout on the treadmill in the basement of his house when he did not feel right.
Before Dansereau could call out for help, he collapsed. His daughter was upstairs in her room studying when she heard a loud thud from downstairs. She knew that it was too loud for something to have dropped and her heart sank. Maslyn rushed to the basement where she found her 51-year old father facing down on the floor. After checking him, he did not have a pulse.
She did not hesitate to perform CPR. As a third-year nursing student, Maslyn had taken courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) which was part of her education at MacEwan University.
Chest compressions
Maslyn instructed her mother to call 911 and continued with the chest compressions until the paramedics arrived 20 minutes later. During cardiac emergencies, prompt delivery of CPR can mean the difference between life and death.
Upon the arrival of the paramedics at the Dansereau home, they shocked Martian three times and started to provide advanced care. There were no neurological side effects and his daughter clearly saved his life.
