Turki Ayash was given a certificate from Essex-Windsor EMS. The grade 11 student at Catholic Central High School in Windsor used skills that he learned in class only a few days earlier to save the life of his father during a heart attack.
Importance of CPR training
Turki Ayash who came to Canada with his Syrian refugee family 3 years ago shared that he was taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) over two days as part of the physical education curriculum.
Two days after the CPR lessons, he sprung into action to help his 49-year old father who was having a heart attack. Recalling what he learned in class, Ayash performed chest compressions to maintain his father’s blood flow. Although his father was not breathing, the first responders who arrived on the scene told Ayash that his actions ensured that his father’s blood kept flowing.
The physical education teacher of Ayash shared that he got goosebumps during class when his student first told him what happened.
