A Targeted Incident, Police Say

According to Staff Sgt. Kevin Dyrgas, investigators believe the shooting was targeted rather than random. No arrests have been made, and the identity of the offender remains unknown. A woman at the scene was taken in for questioning, though police have not confirmed her involvement.

The section of Bowness Road between 45th Street and 46th Street was cordoned off with police tape as officers diverted traffic, spoke with witnesses, and canvassed nearby businesses for surveillance footage or additional information.

Neighbourhood Shock After Early-Morning Gunshot

Several residents reported hearing a loud noise around the time of the shooting. Sandra Craft, who lives nearby, described hearing “a terrible bang” that sounded like a gunshot, followed by raised voices outside.

“It’s always noisy here,” she said. “But early this morning it felt different… now that I realize it was a shooting, it’s really close to home.”

The identity of the victim will be released following an autopsy scheduled for early this week. Police continue to ask anyone with information to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers.

Why First Aid Knowledge Is Essential in Emergencies

Situations like this reinforce how important it is to be prepared for emergencies of any kind. While not every tragedy can be prevented, knowing how to respond quickly with basic first aid can make a meaningful difference. Skills such as controlling severe bleeding, assessing injuries, and performing CPR can help stabilize someone before EMS arrives.

If you want to build confidence in responding to real-world emergencies, consider enrolling in a certified training program. A great place to start is a well-rounded, hands-on course like the Standard First Aid program, which covers CPR, AED use, wound care, and more.
