According to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, Deschenes was hiking with friends on Saturday morning when he suddenly collapsed roughly four kilometres into the trail. His friends and nearby hikers immediately started CPR in an effort to revive him while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.
A large coordinated rescue response followed. Conservation officers, additional rescuers, and a New Hampshire National Guard helicopter were deployed to reach the remote area quickly. Rescuers lowered a litter from the hovering aircraft, and a medic airlifted Deschenes to Littleton Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities say Deschenes had travelled to New Hampshire with friends to enjoy the Columbus Day holiday weekend—a trip that ended in an unforeseen tragedy.
Why CPR Training Matters in Remote Emergencies
Emergencies in outdoor or remote locations often happen far from medical help. In these critical moments, early CPR and AED use can mean the difference between life and death. When a person collapses from cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR drastically reduces survival chances.
This incident highlights why CPR awareness and training are essential for hikers, travellers, workers, and everyday Canadians.
