Police Respond to Sudden Death at Edmonton Remand Centre

Edmonton police are investigating the sudden death of a male inmate at the Edmonton Remand Centre in northwest Edmonton. The incident occurred late Saturday morning and is now under review by both police and medical authorities.

According to Staff Sgt. Angela Kemp, officers were called to the facility at approximately 10 a.m. after staff discovered an inmate unresponsive inside his cell. Details of the incident were originally reported by the Edmonton Journal and can be read in full here:

CPR Initiated Before EMS Arrival

Correctional staff immediately began performing CPR in an effort to save the man’s life.

Emergency medical services arrived shortly afterward and took over care, but despite these life-saving efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead at the scene. Alberta Justice spokesperson Brendan Cox confirmed the response details.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is investigating the death alongside Edmonton police. Alberta Justice has also confirmed that an internal review will be conducted to help identify contributing factors and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Second Death Raises Additional Concerns

This incident follows another death earlier in the month. On May 5, a female inmate at the same facility was found unresponsive in her cell and later pronounced dead by emergency responders. That case remains under investigation, with an internal review also underway.
