Calgary First Aid – Water Safety Lessons from Lynn Canyon

A heartbreaking incident in Lynn Canyon, North Vancouver, shows how quickly a fun day by the water can turn dangerous.

In July 2017, a 16-year-old boy visiting from Pennsylvania was swimming near Twin Falls when he was suddenly caught in a strong, fast-moving current and pulled underwater. Emergency crews from North Vancouver RCMP, local firefighters, and B.C. Ambulance responded within minutes. Before they arrived, family members shouted for help and several bystanders bravely pulled the teen from the water and began CPR immediately. He was rushed to Lions Gate Hospital but sadly did not survive.

A similar tragedy was also reported when another young boy was found floating face-down at Twin Falls. You can read that related story here:

 A Beautiful but High-Risk Area

Twin Falls in Lynn Canyon is a popular summer spot for swimming, scenic photos, and cliff jumping — but it is also known for its dangers:

  • Strong, unpredictable currents

  • Cold, fast-moving water

  • Underwater rocks, ledges, and narrow channels

  • Limited safe entry and exit points

Despite fencing and large warning signs, visitors still frequently enter restricted areas or attempt risky jumps. Posted signage reports:

  • Eight deaths between 1985 and 2016

  • Sixteen injuries between 2011 and 2015

On hot summer days, emergency crews are often called to the area once a day or more.

What This Teaches Us About Water Safety

This tragedy reminds us of several essential safety tips:

  • Always obey warning signs and barriers

  • Avoid fast-moving water

  • Never dive or cliff-jump into unfamiliar areas

  • Swim only in designated, supervised locations

  • Watch loved ones closely near water

  • Call 9-1-1 immediately in an emergency

Even experienced swimmers can be overwhelmed by sudden drops, cold water, or strong undercurrents.

Why CPR Training Matters

The bystanders who pulled the teen from the water and began CPR took the correct life-saving steps. Early CPR gives a victim the best possible chance of surviving before paramedics arrive.

CPR training helps you:

  • Act quickly in a life-threatening emergency

  • Maintain breathing and circulation

  • Stay focused under pressure

  • Potentially save a life

To gain these essential skills, consider enrolling in a Standard First Aid & CPR course in Calgary.
