A Sudden Emergency on a Surrey Road

The incident occurred around 7:20 p.m. near 56 Avenue and 144 Street in Surrey. The off-duty officer was driving to work when he was flagged down by motorists who noticed a man in distress inside a vehicle stopped in the westbound lane.

Inside the car, the officer found the 66-year-old driver unresponsive and in serious medical distress, later believed to be a heart attack. Recognizing the urgency, he immediately called 911 and, with help from another passerby, removed the man from the vehicle and began CPR.

Proper CPR technique, like the one used by the off-duty Surrey RCMP officer, can help save a life during a cardiac emergency.

Rapid CPR and AED Use Made the Difference

Additional Surrey RCMP officers soon arrived and joined in the life-saving efforts. An automated external defibrillator (AED) was used multiple times while CPR continued. Thanks to this quick and coordinated response, the man regained breathing before being transported to hospital for further care.

Emergency Health Services personnel and the attending physician later confirmed that the rapid CPR combined with early AED intervention likely saved the man’s life.

Why CPR and AED Training Matters

This incident is a powerful reminder that immediate CPR and early AED use can double or triple survival chances during cardiac arrest. Emergencies can happen anywhere, and knowing how to respond can truly save a life.
