Off-duty Surrey RCMP officer helps save man’s life by administering CPR

According to the original report, the incident happened around 7:20 p.m. near 56 Avenue and 144 Street in Surrey. The off-duty officer was on his way to work when he was urgently flagged down by motorists who noticed a man in medical distress inside a vehicle stopped in the westbound lane.

Immediate Response Made All the Difference

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the officer quickly called 911. With help from another motorist, he safely removed the man from the vehicle and began administering CPR. His training — paired with the willingness of bystanders to assist — played a crucial role in the outcome.

More officers soon arrived on scene and continued CPR. An automated external defibrillator (AED) was used multiple times before the man was transported to a nearby hospital.

Health professionals later confirmed that the combination of early CPR and timely AED use was essential to saving his life.

Community Effort Acknowledged

Surrey RCMP Sgt. Alanna Dunlop expressed deep gratitude to the civilians who stopped to help:

“Surrey RCMP would like to thank those members of the public who assisted us during this incident and potentially helped save a life. The quick response by the attending officers and civilians were absolutely vital to such a positive outcome.”

The man was later reported to be breathing on his own and doing well — a remarkable turnaround made possible by quick thinking, teamwork, and proper first aid training.

Why First Aid Training Matters

This incident highlights a powerful truth: CPR and AED skills can save a life before professional help arrives.

Every minute without CPR drops a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. With early CPR and defibrillation, survival rates can double or even triple.

First aid training empowers everyday people — not just first responders — to act confidently during emergencies.
