Members of London’s Strategic Priorities and Policy Committee have voted in favor of recommending the council to adopt a mandatory masking bylaw.
The committee, comprised of city councilors and the mayor, decided after a discussion to put forward the proposed bylaw at the next council meeting. The bylaw would see all people entering any public establishment to wear a face mask or covering which covers the nose, mouth, and chin.
The decision came after a discussion with the London Medical Officer of Health who encouraged councilors to take action. When there are higher levels of disease, extra protection is needed.
Children below 12 years old, individuals who have a medical condition or disability which prevents their ability to wear a face mask, and those unable to apply or remove a face mask on their own are exempted from the new rule. The health unit also stated that there is no requirement for anyone to provide proof of exemption.
The bylaw also exempts people who are at an establishment for eating, drinking, or while engaging in athletic or fitness activities.
