Man in Critical Condition After Northeast Calgary House Fire
A man in his 20s was rushed to Peter Lougheed Centre in critical, life-threatening condition after a house fire broke out Sunday morning in northeast Calgary.
Emergency crews were called to the 100 block of Templeby Drive N.E. around 10:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and significant flames extending from the main floor up into the attic.
Battalion Chief Paul Frederick reported that crews acted quickly to assess the scene and begin an immediate search of the home. The victim was located inside during that search. Once he was brought outside, firefighters performed CPR while awaiting EMS. Paramedics then took over advanced care before transporting the man to hospital.

EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux noted it is still too early to confirm whether the man’s injuries were caused directly by the fire or by another medical event that may have occurred beforehand.
No one else was inside the residence at the time. According to neighbour Omar Almuktar Almahdwi, the man’s wife and children had stayed with relatives for the weekend. “So no one was there except him,” he said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Calgary Fire Department is asking anyone with information, photos, or video from the incident to contact piofire@calgary.ca.
Why Immediate Action Matters: CPR Saves Lives
This incident is a powerful reminder of how critical early CPR can be during life-threatening emergencies. Firefighters initiated CPR within minutes of locating the victim—steps proven to significantly improve survival rates when someone isn’t breathing or has no pulse.
Whether the emergency is a fire, cardiac arrest, or sudden collapse, knowing how to provide CPR and use an AED can make the difference between life and death.
