A Sudden Workplace Emergency

According to Ottawa paramedics, the man received an electric shock while working below ground, causing him to go into cardiac arrest. His co-workers reacted immediately:

  • They shut off the electrical current

  • Lifted him up to the surface

  • Started CPR right away

Two workers give CPR to a colleague after an electrical accident at a job site, highlighting the importance of quick action and CPR training in workplace emergencies.

Firefighters arrived moments later, and paramedics followed just two minutes after that. A defibrillation shock successfully restored his heartbeat.

Bystander Action Made the Difference

Paramedics confirmed that the resuscitation was successful, stating:

“Resuscitation was successful and spontaneous circulation was restored. We want to recognize the importance of the actions of the patient’s co-workers who jumped into action and the teamwork among emergency responders.”

They noted that survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest depends heavily on:

  • Immediate CPR

  • Early use of an AED

  • Quick teamwork and communication

Without these actions, the outcome “would have been quite different,” they added.

The man was transported to hospital and is now recovering thanks to the fast response on-site.

Why CPR Training Matters

This incident is a clear reminder that CPR-trained individuals—and quick access to an AED—can save lives. Emergencies can happen anywhere, and early intervention dramatically improves survival chances.
