According to the report, emergency responders were called to the shoreline after Cushing was found in distress while kite surfing with others. Despite immediate CPR efforts by bystanders and the rapid arrival of first responders, he tragically did not survive.
A Passionate “Windchaser”
Russell Cushing, of Dayton, Yarmouth County, was described by loved ones as a devoted family man with an unmistakable passion for kite surfing.
In his obituary, he was fondly remembered as a “Windchaser”—someone who lived for the thrill of chasing the perfect wind conditions. He often monitored weather updates and wind apps, always seeking ideal moments to get out on the water.
But beyond his love of wind sports, those closest to him say his greatest love was his family. He is remembered as a caring, compassionate individual whose presence will be deeply missed.
Emergency Response and CPR Efforts
Sgt. Dan Gaudet of the Meteghan RCMP detachment reported that police, fire, and ambulance crews were dispatched following a 911 call at approximately 1:30 p.m. on January 24.
When responders arrived, bystanders on the shoreline were already performing CPR, doing everything they could until additional help arrived. Cushing was transported by EHS to Yarmouth Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Because the death was sudden, an autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause. The RCMP continue to work with the medical examiner’s office as part of standard procedure.
Cushing’s funeral took place on January 29, with donations in his memory directed to SOS Children’s Villages and the Yarmouth Kia Comets.
