Crews Battle Large House Fire in Surrey, Man Revived After CPR

A man is in serious condition after being rescued from a large house fire in Surrey late Wednesday night, where firefighters’ quick actions and immediate CPR likely saved his life. The incident was first reported by the Vancouver Sun in its coverage of the emergency.

According to Surrey assistant fire chief Jason Cairney, the fire broke out shortly before midnight at a home near 116 Avenue and 140 Street. Flames were reported at the back of the residence when emergency crews were dispatched.

Firefighters Enter Burning Home to Rescue Victim

When firefighters arrived, they were informed that one man was still inside the burning house. While several crews worked to contain the fire, one firefighter entered the residence and located the man on the upper floor.

Cairney said that when the man was pulled from the home, he had no pulse and was not breathing. First responders immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and were able to revive him before he was transported by ambulance to hospital.

Family Evacuated and Treated at Scene

Four other occupants of the home, believed to be members of the same family, were able to evacuate safely. A second ambulance was called to assess and treat the residents on the lawn.

Fire officials also received reports that neighbours may have rushed into the burning house to help rescue occupants, though this could not be confirmed as the family members were already outside when crews arrived.

Fire Under Investigation

The fire caused extensive damage to the roof of the house. While officials do not believe the fire was suspicious, it remains under investigation. Cairney praised the responding firefighters for their fast response and life-saving actions.

Why CPR Training Matters
