Shooting Believed to Be Targeted

According to Staff Sgt. Kevin Dyrgas, investigators believe the shooting was targeted and not a random act.

At this time, no suspects have been identified, and no one is in custody in connection with the incident.

“We don’t know who the offender is,” said Dyrgas. “It’s not a random incident.”

A woman was taken in for questioning from the scene, which police confirmed was located along the side of Bowness Road. Authorities have not said whether she is considered a suspect.

Road Closures and Witness Accounts

Police cordoned off Bowness Road between 45th Street and 46th Street, diverting traffic while investigators examined the area. Officers continue to interview witnesses and canvass nearby businesses for additional information.

Nearby residents reported hearing a loud bang around the time of the incident.

“I heard this terrible bang—it sounded like a gunshot,” said local resident Sandra Craft, who noted that the situation felt different than usual early that morning.

“It’s really close to home,” she said. “Knowing now that it was a shooting is frightening.”

Victim Identification Pending

The identity of the victim is expected to be released after an autopsy is completed early this week. Police are asking anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Calgary Police Service or Crime Stoppers.

The shooting marks Calgary’s 19th homicide of 2017.
