A tragic hiking accident near Norvan Falls in Lynn Headwaters Regional Park has prompted an investigation by the BC Coroners Service after a 28-year-old man went into cardiac arrest on Sunday. The man was hiking with a partner when a slip, fall, and head injury turned a routine outdoor trip into a life-threatening emergency in an area with no cell reception.

Emergency officials confirmed the man was airlifted from the scene in critical condition, but despite extensive rescue efforts, he later died.

 What Happened on the Trail

According to North Shore Rescue (NSR) team leader Mike Danks, the victim was crossing a creek when he slipped, fell, and struck his head on a rock. The sudden injury triggered cardiac arrest almost immediately.

With no cell phone reception available, the man’s hiking partner ran seven kilometres out of the backcountry to find help — an exhausting but heroic effort that allowed rescuers to be dispatched as quickly as possible.

NSR received the emergency call around 6 p.m. A helicopter crew quickly located the victim, and rescuers used a long-line system to reach him. They attached an automatic CPR device to provide continuous chest compressions during extraction.

“He got the best care he could have,” Danks said. “I’m really proud of how the team responded.”
