Fernie mourns after deadly ammonia leak

The community of Fernie gathers to support each other after a local incident. There was a memorial of flowers and cards that were placed around the Fernie Arena after a tragic incident where 3 people lost their lives.

Unforeseen tragedy

The mourning spread all over the Elk Valley and the municipalities of Elkford and Sparwood joined in lowering their flags to half-mast as mourning for the loss within the municipal facility.

Upon arrival on the scene, they found a citizen performing CPR to a person.

According to Sparwood Mayer McDougall, our thoughts and prayers as a community are with the families as they cope with the loss.

It was on Tuesday when the emergency crews were called to the arena after reports of an ammonia leak in the facility. Upon arrival on the scene, they found a citizen performing CPR to a person. According to Fire Chief Ted Ruiter, once the crews entered the building, they discovered 2 more victims.
