Family awarded for saving man’s life

A family from Bonavista Bay was awarded by saving the life of a man with autism. The family has training in first-aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in separate courses.

Tony Keats gives support for a man with autism. They were eating lunch together, and he noticed that the man is showing signs of pain. He noticed that the man placed in his mouth a large amount of peanut butter. This autistic man has a tendency of not chewing his food properly. According to Tony he took some peanut butter from the mouth of the man and started performing the Heimlich maneuver and after that he became unresponsive. There was difficulty removing the object from his mouth. Heimlich maneuver is a procedure for removing an obstruction from the windpipe of a person in which a strong pressure is applied on the abdomen, just between the rib cage and the navel.

Timely action

The children of Keats happened to be at home that time. I thanked my son and daughter helped with the emergency situation. The Keats family worked together to revive the man. My son performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the man, while Tony applied compression. Tony’s wife called emergency numbers and the daughter giving them directions.

Keats credits their training in first aid and CPR for saving the life of a man. It is something he learned after the death of his own father about 20 years ago.  He performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on his father, the results were not good and his father died. But saving the life of a man and see him get his life back is amazing. Emergencies can happen to you anytime and prepared in that life saving mode.

Keats encourages everybody to learn and get trained in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, because emergencies can happen anytime and will have self confidence is providing help to the victim.

The Keats family all received an award for helping saved an autistic man who choked and became unconscious. The family provided first aid, CPR and used an AED to revive the man before taken to the hospital. The family never expected to be given an award for their actions. Performing CPR in that kind of emergency and for the whole family to be given an award is amazing.
