The City of Edmonton is proposing to mandate face masks in all indoor public spaces with an associated fine of $100 for non-compliance.
The city council will hold a special meeting to debate and vote on the new COVID-19 pandemic temporary rules, with a proposed start date of August 1. If approved, residents will be required to wear a face mask or covering inside all publicly accessible places, even if they are privately owned. This includes all retail stores, entertainment venues, recreation centers, and restaurants. Vehicle-for-hire services such as taxis and Uber wound also fall under the mandate.
As it is currently crafted, the rules will not apply to jurisdictions overseen by the province including schools, healthcare centers, and hospitals as well as childcare facilities.
