Search Effort Quickly Turns Critical
Emergency crews responded shortly after a 911 call came in around noon. Members of the Ottawa Police Marine, Dive, and Trails Unit searched the river extensively, hoping to find the young man alive. After several hours, the mission transitioned from rescue to recovery.
Police recovered the body shortly after 4 p.m. and were working to notify the young man’s family later that afternoon.
River Closed to Boat Traffic
As part of the investigation, authorities closed a section of the Rideau River—between Hunt Club Road and Hog’s Back Road—to boat traffic. This allowed police and firefighters to conduct their work safely and without interruption.
Officials continue to remind the public about the dangers of swimming in unmonitored waterways, especially during the summer months.
A Reminder of Why CPR Training Matters
Water emergencies can escalate in seconds. While not all drownings are survivable, immediate CPR from a trained bystander can greatly improve a victim’s chance of survival.
If you want to be prepared to respond in emergencies, consider enrolling in a CPR and AED training course.
