A 65-year old man’s brother attempted to get him but it was too late. A small community on Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula is mourning after a man drowned.
Devastating drowning in community
The 65-year old Conche man was moving his boat from one wharf to another during a storm with gale force winds when it occurred according to Mayor Brendan Fitzpatrick.
The motor must have stopped or something else happened. The boat must be going up on a swell and tipped over and capsized when it came down. The man was no more than 30 yards from shore but the strong winds and high waves made the situation a rough one.
The brother of the man was on the shore when the incident occurred and watched the boat capsize. He went to get a boat to get out and help his brother. When he got there, he was lucky to catch his brother and brought him back to shore. Sadly, the man was in the water around 10-15 minutes before he reached him.
The RCMP stated that they are investigating the incident and could not say for certain whether the man was wearing a lifejacket. An autopsy has been scheduled.
