Witnesses Describe a Chaotic and Frightening Scene
The confrontation occurred just outside the apartment of local resident Gabriel Cyr, who described hearing intense screaming moments before police arrived.
Cyr recalled hearing a man shouting “shoot me,” followed by frantic phone calls—likely someone contacting emergency services.Moments later, multiple gunshots rang out, leaving nearby residents shocked. Several witnesses initially believed they were hearing fireworks—an indication of how unusual gun violence is in the area.
Police Response and Emergency Medical Efforts
Police stated that one of the individuals involved, 23-year-old Nicholas Gibbs, allegedly turned toward officers while holding a knife. Officers attempted to subdue him using a Taser, but when those efforts failed, they discharged their firearms.
Witnesses reported seeing officers immediately begin CPR on the victim after the shooting. Gibbs was transported to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Ongoing Investigation
Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau of Independent Inquiry (BEI), has launched an investigation into the incident. Multiple investigators and forensic specialists were assigned to review evidence and determine whether proper procedures were followed.
