19-Year-Old Dies After Serious Crash in Abbotsford: A Reminder of Why CPR Training Matters

A tragic early-morning crash in Abbotsford has claimed the life of a 19-year-old passenger, with investigators pointing to excessive speed and possible alcohol involvement as contributing factors. The collision occurred shortly after 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, in a rural area near Townline and Olund Roads.

What Happened

According to police, four men between the ages of 19 and 25 were travelling in a red Acura when the vehicle lost control, rolled, veered off the roadway, and came to rest partially in a ditch. The force of the crash was severe enough to eject a 19-year-old passenger from the vehicle.

A nearby resident reported being flagged down by one of the wounded occupants. She told CTV News that the group urgently asked her to drive them to a hospital and insisted she not contact police. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, she dialed 911. By the time paramedics arrived, the driver had fled the scene.

Emergency Response & CPR Efforts

Constable Ian MacDonald noted that when officers arrived, “the circumstances didn’t add up,” raising immediate concerns about what had happened and who had been behind the wheel.

All four occupants suffered significant injuries, but the 19-year-old was in critical condition. Paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the scene, working to stabilize him before transport. Despite their efforts, he later died in hospital. The other men are expected to survive.

Collision reconstructionists and major crimes officers continued their investigation through the morning. The vehicle sustained extensive damage, with a cracked passenger-side window and major structural destruction. According to police, the surviving passengers have been uncooperative and have not provided information about who was driving. Authorities are now encouraging any witnesses to come forward.

A Sobering Reminder: Emergencies Can Happen Anytime

Although this incident is heartbreaking, it underscores an important truth: life-threatening emergencies can occur anywhere and without warning. In this case, paramedics immediately performed CPR—a lifesaving skill that can dramatically increase a person’s chances of survival when delivered quickly.

Car crashes, sudden cardiac arrest, drowning, drug overdoses, and workplace injuries all share one thing in common:
bystanders are often the first on scene. Knowing how to respond in those first few minutes can make all the difference.
