ATV Collision Highlights the Life-Saving Importance of CPR and Quick Action

A tragic crash in the RM of Springfield serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly emergencies can unfold — and how critical bystander CPR can be when seconds matter.

A 32-year-old man died Tuesday night after his ATV collided with a pickup truck hauling a trailer of active beehives. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Garven Road, according to Oakbank RCMP.

What Happened

Police say the pickup truck was travelling west when the ATV suddenly came out of a ditch, crossed the road, and struck the vehicle. The impact was severe. When officers arrived, the pickup was in the south ditch and the ATV was heavily damaged on the roadway.

The ATV driver died at the scene. The 27-year-old driver of the truck suffered minor injuries. RCMP confirmed that alcohol was not a factor, and a forensic collision reconstructionist is assisting with the investigation.

A Complicated and Dangerous Scene

Local resident Tony Kuleza arrived shortly after the crash and described the situation as “strange.” Several beehives on the trailer had broken open, scattering bees across the roadway and creating an additional hazard for everyone involved.

Despite the risk, bystanders took action. The truck’s occupants were already on the phone with emergency responders. Kuleza used his phone’s flashlight to warn approaching drivers and help secure the area.

One driver who stopped began CPR on the injured ATV operator until paramedics and STARS Air Ambulance arrived. Some first responders reported being stung by bees while attempting life-saving measures.

“It was an added hazard to a pretty dicey situation,” Kuleza said. “A strange and unfortunate end to a Tuesday.”
