Immediate First Aid in a Shooting or Severe Bleeding Emergency
Although shootings are rare, severe bleeding can occur in everyday situations—vehicle collisions, workplace injuries, kitchen accidents, or recreational activities. In these moments, knowing what to do in the first few minutes is crucial.
Essential steps if you encounter a gunshot wound or heavy bleeding:
-
Ensure safety first
Make sure the scene is safe before approaching the injured person. -
Call 911 immediately
Provide clear details: what happened, where you are, and how many people are injured. -
Control the bleeding
Apply firm, direct pressure with gloved hands or a clean cloth.-
Add more layers if blood soaks through—do not remove the original.
-
Use a tourniquet if you are trained and the bleeding is severe from a limb.
-
-
Keep the person calm and still
This reduces bleeding and helps prevent shock. -
Monitor breathing and responsiveness
Begin CPR if the person becomes unresponsive and is not breathing.
These skills are easiest to perform effectively when you’ve had proper hands-on training.
