What Happened at Canada Place?
According to Vancouver police, a charter tour bus filled with passengers struck three pedestrians on Canada Place Way, between the Vancouver Convention Centre and Canada Place. All three victims—a 49-year-old man, an older male relative, and a 15-year-old girl—were visiting from Massachusetts.
Emergency responders transported all three to hospital. Sadly, the 49-year-old man later died. The older man sustained serious injuries, and the teenage girl suffered minor injuries.
Eyewitness Accounts Paint a Harrowing Scene
Witnesses described the moments before the impact. The tourist shuttle, headed toward the Capilano Suspension Bridge, had just pulled away slowly from the curb when the pedestrians appeared in the roadway near a parked silver Ford SUV.
The bus driver immediately hit the brakes but couldn’t stop in time.
One witness, Mushfiqur Rahman, recalled hearing the crash and running to help. He said at least two people were pinned beneath the bus—one unconscious and the other groaning in pain. He also described the emotional distress visible on the face of the bus driver.
After the collision, the bus slammed into the SUV, which had its trunk open while being loaded with luggage. The open trunk lodged into the front window of the bus, shattering the glass. Personal belongings, including luggage and shoes, were scattered across the street.
Emergency Response: CPR Performed at the Scene
Firefighters and paramedics arrived quickly. They worked carefully to lift the bus while passengers and the driver remained onboard. According to witnesses, it took roughly 20 minutes to free the victims.
First responders were seen giving CPR to the 49-year-old victim before he was rushed to hospital. Despite their efforts, he sadly did not survive.
The Vancouver Police Collision Investigation Unit continues to examine the circumstances, reviewing video footage, photographs, and conducting a mechanical inspection of the bus.
The Vancouver Trolley Company, which operated the tour bus, expressed deep regret and shared condolences with the affected family.
