Face shields may not be commonplace in all public spaces yet, but as COVID-19 continues, more Canadians are considering the plastic protective face wear.
The plastic face shields are generally used in medical settings to protect healthcare workers but are now being used in restaurants, schools, and grocery stores in both Canada and abroad to help curb the spread of COVID-19.
With face masks, there is a lack of human connectivity and a sense of anonymity when you only see the top part of a person’s face. Face shields might solve that issue according to the founder of Threads, a tights company that sells non-medical masks.
Studies on face shields
While there is a lot of justified interest in face shields at the moment, it is too early to suggest they be swapped for face masks.
The government health officials recommend everyone to wear a non-medical face mask in public settings when physical distancing is not possible to reduce the spread of infectious droplets. The masks must securely fit and non-medical masks must be washed regularly.
Having a non-medical mask or face covering has been a requirement for air travelers in Canada since April 20.
