The Incident
Around 1 p.m., Abbotsford police and paramedics were called to the 29500-block of Taylor Road after receiving reports of an ATV that had left the roadway. The crash occurred in a rural residential area where the terrain drops sharply into a ravine.
Reports indicate the ATV had plunged approximately 30 metres. Two individuals were riding the vehicle: the man who later died and his five-year-old grandson. The child sustained minor injuries and was assessed by emergency personnel.
Cardiac Arrest and Emergency Response
Following the crash, the man went into cardiac arrest. Emergency crews immediately began CPR and continued their efforts, but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The BC Coroners Service is continuing its investigation, including the possibility of a medical event that may have contributed to the crash.
A Reminder of ATV Safety Risks
ATVs are widely used for recreation and utility purposes, but they can be dangerous—especially in areas with steep drops, loose terrain, or limited visibility. Even skilled riders can encounter sudden hazards that lead to serious injuries.
This incident highlights the need for safe operating practices: wearing helmets, maintaining control on uneven ground, and being mindful of surroundings when carrying passengers.
Why CPR Training Matters
In situations involving cardiac arrest, immediate action can be critical. Early CPR can significantly improve a person’s chances of survival—sometimes doubling or tripling the odds.
Although not every outcome can be changed, as seen in this tragic case, having the skills to perform CPR means being prepared to help when it matters most.
