Man Dies After Police-Involved Shooting in Brampton
A 26-year-old man has died after being stunned and shot multiple times during a police-involved incident in Brampton on Monday evening. His family says he had long-standing mental health challenges.
The incident occurred on Sawston Circle, near Edenbrook Hill Drive and Bovaird Drive. According to Peel Regional Police, officers were called to the home around 5:22 p.m. for a domestic-related situation and arrived shortly after at 5:31 p.m.
Constable Bancroft Wright told CP24 that while officers were inside the residence, they encountered one of the occupants. During that interaction, a police service weapon was discharged, striking the man.
Peel Regional Paramedic Services found the victim with life-threatening injuries. CPR was performed at the scene; however, the man was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Family Says Police Had Attended the Home Multiple Times
The man has been identified by family members as 26-year-old D’Andre Campbell. His brother told CP24 that Campbell struggled with mental health issues, and police had attended the home numerous times in the past without any serious escalation.
“Police have been to the house before, but nothing like this,” Dajor Campbell said. “He’s the one that called them too, so how you gonna come into the house and shoot him? That doesn’t make sense.”
Several family members, including younger siblings, were reportedly inside the home at the time, and some witnessed the shooting.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) — mandated to investigate cases involving police where there is death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault — has launched a formal investigation. Early SIU findings indicate that two officers deployed conducted-energy weapons (Tasers) before one officer fired his gun multiple times.
Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the SIU. Peel Regional Police say a heavy police presence remains in the area.
