Constable Hailed as Hero After Reviving Six-Week-Old Baby

The baby, Evan, had been out grocery shopping with his mother and two-year-old sister at the Real Canadian Superstore on April 19. As they returned to their vehicle, Evan suddenly began to foam at the mouth and turned blue—a frightening sign that he was no longer breathing.

Realizing something was seriously wrong, Evan’s mother rushed through the parking lot in panic, holding her unresponsive newborn in her arms.

A Race Against Time

Constable Buys was nearby conducting a traffic stop when a 911 call came across the radio. He immediately broke off and headed straight for the store’s parking lot. Upon arrival, he was met by a distraught mother pleading, “Please save my baby.”

Without hesitation, Buys placed Evan on the back seat of his police cruiser. The infant had no pulse and was not breathing. Buys began CPR right away, performing chest compressions on the tiny newborn while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Within moments, his efforts began to show signs of hope. As first responders pulled in, Evan started regaining colour. Soon after, he coughed—and then began to cry, signaling that his heart and breathing had returned.

Evan was rushed to hospital in Oakville and later transferred to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where he underwent several tests. Thanks to the quick response and life-saving skills of Const. Buys, Evan survived a situation that could have ended very differently.
