Surrey Fire Leaves Toddlers and Parent in Critical Condition: A Powerful Reminder of Why First Aid Training Matters
A devastating and suspicious fire in a Surrey basement suite has left two toddlers and one of their parents in critical condition, prompting widespread concern throughout the community.
The fire broke out early Sunday morning. Although initial reports indicated only the children were critically injured, Surrey RCMP later confirmed that one parent is also fighting for their life. According to police, confusion over the parent’s condition occurred because they were released from one hospital and immediately transported to another for more advanced care.
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Elenore Sturko noted the intense public interest in the case, emphasizing just how upsetting the situation is — particularly because young children were involved. While the fire remains classified as suspicious, police have not released any information regarding possible causes or suspects.
A Community Struggling to Process the Tragedy
Neighbors described a heartbreaking scene as first responders performed CPR and emergency first aid on the roadway outside the home. Residents stood nearby in shock as firefighters and paramedics fought to stabilize the victims.
“We all pray for them,” said neighbor Ragender Chauhan, who witnessed firefighters performing CPR on the children.
Several neighbors also reported that police had previously visited the home and were seen at the property only hours before the fire started.
