Tragedy in Conche: Community Mourns After Boating Accident Highlights Water Safety Risks
The small Northern Peninsula community of Conche is grieving after a 65-year-old resident drowned on Friday during severe weather conditions. The man had been moving his boat from one wharf to another when the accident occurred—a task many in the community are familiar with, but this time under unexpectedly dangerous conditions.

Drowning of man in Conche ‘devastating’ for small community
What Happened
According to Roddickton RCMP and local officials, gale-force winds and large swells were battering the area near Lighthouse Point when the man’s boat appeared to experience engine trouble. With the motor likely stalled, the vessel drifted into rougher waters. A large swell reportedly lifted the boat before it capsized, throwing him into the ocean.
Despite being only about 30 yards from shore, the violent wind and waves created extremely hazardous conditions.
A Brother’s Brave Effort
The man’s brother witnessed the capsize from shore. Realizing the danger, he rushed to find a boat to attempt a rescue—an effort made more difficult by the same hazardous conditions that caused the accident.
When he eventually reached his brother, the victim had reportedly been in the cold water for 10–15 minutes. He pulled him aboard and brought him back to shore, where CPR was administered immediately. Unfortunately, the man did not respond.
RCMP noted that he was not wearing a lifejacket when recovered, though it remains unclear whether he had been wearing one before falling into the water. The investigation continues.
Devastation Felt Across the Community
Conche Mayor Brendan Fitzpatrick described the impact as profound:
“It’s pretty devastating, actually. Everybody’s flabbergasted with it… Everywhere you go, that’s the topic of conversation.”
In a small town where everyone knows each other, the loss has deeply affected residents and sparked renewed conversations about marine safety.
Water Safety Matters — Even for Experienced Boaters
This tragedy is a stark reminder that emergencies can unfold rapidly on the water, even for seasoned boaters. Severe weather, mechanical failures, and unpredictable swells demand preparation and caution.
Key safety reminders include:
Wear a lifejacket at all times, even close to shore.
Check weather and marine conditions before launching.
Routinely inspect boat engines and equipment.
Carry safety gear and have a communication plan.
