Tragic Near-Drowning in Ste-Julienne Underscores the Urgent Need for CPR & Water Safety Training

A heartbreaking incident in Sainte-Julienne, Quebec, has once again highlighted how quickly water emergencies can turn fatal—especially when children are involved. A 10-year-old boy died after being pulled unconscious from a private lake on Saturday afternoon, despite rapid efforts to revive him.

What Happened

Provincial police confirmed that they received an emergency call at approximately 1:15 p.m. reporting an unconscious child found in the water on 3e Rang in Sainte-Julienne, a community about 70 km north of Montreal.

The boy was quickly removed from the lake, and first responders arrived soon after to begin CPR. Emergency personnel continued resuscitation efforts as he was transported to a nearby hospital.

He was scheduled to be transferred to a Montreal facility for further treatment, but tragically, he died before that could occur.

A Stark Reminder of How Fast Water Emergencies Happen

Drowning can occur silently and in seconds. Even confident swimmers can encounter trouble due to fatigue, cold water, sudden slips, or medical complications. In many water emergencies, bystanders are the first responders, long before paramedics arrive.

This tragedy is a sobering reminder of how essential it is to recognize drowning signs quickly and know how to begin life-saving interventions immediately.

Why CPR Training Is Crucial

Effective CPR administered in the first few minutes of a drowning incident can significantly increase survival rates. Unfortunately, many people don’t feel prepared or confident enough to perform CPR when it matters most.

Learning CPR not only provides the technical skills needed to respond but also gives people the confidence to act decisively under pressure.

If you want to gain these life-saving skills, consider enrolling in a certified CPR course. Calgary residents can explore training options through Calgary First Aid, including comprehensive CPR and AED programs:
