Tragic Drowning of 18-Year-Old Kayaker Near Beaconsfield: A Reminder of Why First Aid and CPR Skills Matter

An 18-year-old kayaker tragically drowned just metres from the Beaconsfield shoreline, raising difficult questions about how such an incident could happen so close to land. The Coroner’s Office has now launched an inquest to help determine the chain of events that led to the young man’s death.

This article summarizes information originally reported by the Montreal Gazette, which you can read in full here:

How did 18-year-old kayaker drown so close to Beaconsfield shoreline?

The drowning occurred in Lake St-Louis near Centennial Park, an area frequently used by kayakers and paddleboarders. Despite the proximity to shore, rescue teams were unable to reach the victim in time.

What Witnesses Reported

According to the Montreal Gazette, nearby witnesses heard the young man call for help after falling into the water. Before anyone could intervene, he slipped beneath the waves.

Search and rescue teams spent several hours combing the area before a dive team recovered his body around 9 p.m. Thursday evening.

What Investigators Found at the Scene

The man had rented his kayak from a watercraft station located in Centennial Park. His kayak was later found wedged in the rocks along the breaker wall beside Lord Reading Yacht Club. His lifejacket was discovered floating in the water nearby.

A buoy marking the recovery site bobbed only 2–3 meters from the breaker wall — shockingly close to shore.

Despite these details, the exact circumstances remain unclear.

Beaconsfield Mayor Georges Bourelle, who was on site during recovery efforts, shared that even the victim’s family was confused. A distraught relative told him the young man was “a good swimmer” who had taken formal swimming lessons.

“It doesn’t make sense, so we’ll have to see what the Coroner finds,” Bourelle said.

Summer Drowning Trends in Quebec

The incident was the 33rd drowning fatality in Quebec that summer — a sobering reminder of how quickly water emergencies can unfold.

Kayak Rental Policies at Centennial Park

Before renting a kayak or paddleboard, users must:

  • Be at least 16 years old

  • Provide identification

  • Sign a waiver

  • Follow posted safety rules

  • Wear a lifejacket (mandatory for all boaters)

The watercraft station, operated by a subcontractor, temporarily closed the day after the incident but has since reopened.

Bourelle publicly thanked all rescue workers involved, acknowledging the emotional weight of the tragedy.
