According to Const. Miguel Belzile of the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais, the incident happened around 1:20 p.m. at a home on Chemin des Terres. The boy had been attending a children’s birthday celebration when he was later found unresponsive in an above-ground pool.

Critical but Stable Condition

The toddler was initially transported by ambulance to Gatineau Hospital and later transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Officials reported that he remained in critical but stable condition following the incident.

Police released few details but confirmed that several adults were present at the gathering and “there were a lot of children at the party,” showing how quickly emergencies can unfold even with supervision.

Immediate CPR Made a Difference

Family members immediately pulled the child from the pool and began CPR until paramedics arrived — a crucial step that can dramatically increase survival in drowning emergencies.

Drowning often happens silently and within seconds. Once submerged, oxygen levels drop rapidly, and brain injury can begin within minutes. In these situations, knowing how to start CPR immediately can be the difference between life and death.

Why CPR Training Matters

Pool parties, family events, and busy environments can create distractions that make constant supervision difficult. This incident is a reminder that emergencies can happen anytime — and being prepared is essential.

Knowing CPR gives you the confidence and ability to act fast. Proper, timely intervention keeps oxygen circulating and can maintain life until advanced help arrives.
