Sean Ferguson stated that he wound not get mad about striking out again. The 23-year old Sydney Sooners catcher was back playing baseball after a cardiac arrest in spring.
He collapsed while playing basketball with friends at Sullivan Field House. The group included his teammates. By performing CPR and using a defibrillator, the rapid thinking of his teammates saves Ferguson’s life. He was able to pull through after a few days in a coma.
Heart attack on the field
On June 24, Ferguson traveled to Halifax to undergo surgery for the placement of a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (SICD). It is a device that delivers a shock to the heart to restore the right rhythm. This was followed by an 8-week recovery phase.
After consulting the doctors regarding his progress, Ferguson decided to return to the field. On Aug. 20, he played at home against the Kentville Wildcats.
Prompt intervention during cardiac emergencies require immediate CPR followed by an automated external defibrillator (AED). The life-saving measures can increase the chances of survival.
