Calgary First Aid: Maryland Officer’s Tragic Death Highlights the Importance of CPR Training
A tragic incident in the Baltimore County suburb of Perry Hall, Maryland, has left a community shaken after a female police officer was fatally injured while responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle. The event sparked a massive overnight manhunt and serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly emergencies can unfold.
According to reports, rifle-toting police officers flooded the neighborhood after witnesses heard a loud “pop” and saw the officer struck and run over by a fleeing Jeep. Authorities believe multiple suspects were involved and warned residents that those responsible were armed and dangerous.

A Routine Call Turns Deadly
Police spokesman Cpl. Shawn Vinson said the officer was responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle when she encountered at least one suspect
Investigators believe the incident may have begun as a burglary in progress, noting damage to a patio door at a nearby home.
Witness Tony Kurek told reporters that his adult son saw the officer with her gun drawn as she confronted the occupants of the Jeep. Moments later, the vehicle sped away, leaving skid marks behind and the officer critically injured on the ground.
“She was bleeding from her head,” Kurek said.
Bystanders Step In to Help
Several residents rushed to assist the injured officer, attempting to keep her alive until paramedics arrived. Logan Kurek, a volunteer firefighter, said he heard his younger brother “frantically screaming” and ran outside to perform CPR.
Despite immediate CPR efforts by bystanders and emergency medical care, the officer was transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
This heartbreaking moment highlights the importance of bystander intervention. While CPR cannot save every life, early action can significantly improve survival chances in many emergencies.
Community on Lockdown During Overnight Manhunt
By Monday evening, police confirmed a homicide investigation was underway but said it was still too early to determine exactly how the officer was fatally injured. An autopsy was planned to establish whether she was struck by the vehicle, shot, or both.
A large-scale manhunt continued through the night, involving aviation units, canine teams, and heavily armed officers searching wooded areas and residential backyards. The suspects’ Jeep was later found abandoned on a nearby road.
Residents across a wide area of Perry Hall were urged to remain indoors with doors and windows locked. Three elementary schools were placed on alert, keeping students and staff inside for hours before parents were allowed to pick up their children.
“This is a shock,” said local resident Dahle Amendt. “It’s a quiet community. It’s just so sad.”
