A 59-year old man from Sydney died in a suspected drowning at Port Hood Beach. According to Inverness County RCMP, they received a call to check the beach before 2 PM on Saturday.
According to Paul D’Eon, director of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, the man was swimming with his wife when the 2 lifeguards observed the couple to have difficulty. There was a slight wave which is not usually a concern to the lifeguards but might be overwhelming to weak swimmers.
Drowning incident
One of the lifeguards went out to bring the man to the shore. At first, the man was kicking and attempting to swim but while he was brought to the shore, he ceased to kick. The lifeguard tried to talk to the man and at some point, his conversation no longer made much sense followed by gasping for air. It was then the lifeguard realized that there is something wrong.
For the lifeguards, the man went into medical distress before he was taken back to the shore. The man was given oxygen. The lifeguards performed CPR and even used a defibrillator but he died at the scene. Another lifeguard reached the wife of the man and taken back to the shore.
